Harrison Poultry Scholarship – UGA Poultry Science Department

Updated: Sep 9, 2020

Congratulations to Lorretta Chappell of LaGrange, GA for being the recipient of the Harrison Poultry Scholarship from the University of Georgia Poultry Science Department!

Harold Harrison after returning from serving in WWII, started a small hatchery that he grew into one of the state’s most successful broiler companies. Mr. Harrison was a loyal and generous supporter of UGA, the College of Agriculture and Poultry Science. His initial gift to the Department has grown into its largest endowment and this scholarship is considered one of the most prestigious in the Department.

Several years ago, Mr. Harrison himself donated a great amount of money to the UGA Poultry Science Department to start an endowed scholarship for poultry science students in the department. The amount of the scholarship awarded each year depends on the interest earned on the original principal donation from Mr. Harrison, but can range from $1,000 to $2,500. Some years the scholarship has even been able to be given to 2 deserving students! Students within the department apply for scholarships, and then a committee of professors choose students to receive the scholarship based on their qualifications.

2020 recipient of the Harrison Poultry Scholarship, Lorretta Chappell, says, “I have found a home with the poultry science department at UGA. Over the years, I’ve built many lifelong friendships that I couldn’t imagine having. The professors and faculty within this department have shown they not only care about our education, but also care about us as a person.”
